Why Schools Are Mandating Bullet-Resistant Film

The Pros and Cons of Security Window Film

Why Schools Are Mandating Bullet-Resistant Film

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) requires that all K-12 schools install security window film on certain glass doors and windows. This entry-resistant film is also known as bullet-resistant film, creating a common misconception that the film is designed to stop bullets from entering.

As a provider of unrivaled security solutions and the largest systems integrator in the Rio Grande Valley, our team at Circle Industries thought it prudent to clear up any falsehoods and misinterpretations. After all, in this case, not knowing what a security device is capable of can end in tragedy. Here, we’ll explore what this film can do to protect students and staff and what is required to stop bullet penetration at your McAllen, TX, school.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of Bullet-Resistant Film

Believing that bullet-resistant film can stop bullets can be a deadly mistake. To be clear, the average glass thickness at Texas schools is about 8 mil or 0.008 inches. Even at 14 mil, it is not designed to stop bullets from entering a school.

It is designed to stop the glass from shattering after being struck by a bullet. This protects those in the vicinity from glass projectiles, which can do significant harm, causing cuts and lacerations. This feature also protects people from potential harm in the event of a natural disaster, such as hurricanes or tornadoes.

It is also made to hold the shattered glass in place, which can delay an intruder’s entry. While it may only delay the intruder by seconds or minutes, that length of time is enough to give students and staff a chance to get to safety.

Why Schools Use Security Window Film

Bullet-resistant film is much cheaper than replacing the glass on all windows. At hundreds of dollars per square foot, the budget required to outfit a single school building is massive. Additionally, due to the weight of the glass, buildings often need to be modified, further elevating the cost.

Conversely, the installation process of bullet-resistant film is relatively quick and does not require any structural changes to the building. This film can also reduce heat gain and block harmful UV rays. As Dan Millman said, “A little bit of something is better than nothing.” While he was referring to the little steps we can take to make a better life, the same goes for schools looking for solutions to the growing violence they face.

We need to take every “small step” available to protect those we love and give them the best chance at a life free of hostility and force.
